It's taken me seven years to notch my second Cheltenham Festival winner courtesy of Any Currency – I think I’d be sick if I had to wait another seven years for the next!

I will have ridden well in excess of 100 winners this season and it would have been disappointing if one of those hadn’t been at Jump racing’s showpiece meeting.

As I said at the start of the week I was hopeful of getting one on the board and I felt Wednesday represented my best chance of the week.

Jaleo was favourite for the Fred Winter, but disappointed for no obvious reason, while High Bridge ran a fine race to finish sixth in what was a hot bumper. We had every chance entering the final couple of furlongs and he just faded at the end.

So it was left to my old friend Any Currency, who I first rode into third in the Bet 365 Chase four years ago, to get me on the board.

All credit to trainer Martin Keighley who took the hood off and instead relied on ear plugs to get him through the preliminaries before I removed them 15 seconds before the start. It worked a trick as he’s never jumped or travelled as well.

We were encouraged when we saw the conditions of the Cross Country race had changed meaning we were all off level weights. We did think that perhaps the change had come 12 months too late as Any Currency is now in his 14th year.

In the end he put in a career best and gained a deserved win, having been second in the race for the last two years. The change in race conditions certainly helped as he was 23lb better off with the runner-up from their race in November.

I am not sure what the plan is yet, but if asked for my opinion, I would want to keep going with him and possibly be here in 12 months’ time. He’s evergreen and enjoying his racing.

The week would be sealed if I can ride a winner for John Ferguson in his final season with a licence before he takes up his role with Godolphin.

Leoncavallo, who runs in the JCB Triumph, has enjoyed a great season, winning five from six for John.

It may have been six when he unseated at the last behind Sceau Royal in the trial for this in December. I think 20-1 is a very big price and he could easily be in the frame.

Stablemate Devilment may represent my best chance of the day in the Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle.

All the signs have been very positive and he’s been working very well. He’s won around here before and has been freshened up since the Ladbroke at Ascot in December. He might not be well handicapped but has real talent and again 33-1 looks too big.

Colin Tizzard’s West Approach is taking a big step up in class in the Albert Bartlett Hurdle. I rode him to win his bumper last year and he has done okay since. He will be a horse worth following in the future but this grade might be too challenging.

My final ride of the week is Charlie Longsdon’s Germany Calling in the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase.

The ground will suit him and he’s a very solid and professional performer and Charlie’s horses are running well. Clearly this is his biggest test but hopefully he can outrun his odds.

If I can’t ride a winner for John, then hopefully Craig Nichol can in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle.

He won a good handicap at Ascot and is a very straightforward horse and it’s a real advantage to have the leading conditional rider on board. He’s another one with a great each-way shout.

As for the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup, I think the small field will really suit Don Cossack, but I think Cue Card will make it tough for him. I would love to see Cue Card win the £1million bonus for the Tizzards.

Finally, I wish Victoria Pendleton all the best on Pacha Du Polder for the St James’s Place Foxhunter Chase. I have schooled with her before and spent a little time with her before her win at Wincanton. She has brought some great publicity for the sport, and hopefully a different audience will take an interest in the sport. I take my hat off to her.
