FORMER Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar has joined Sunderland on a one-year deal.
The 34-year-old South African, who played under manager David Moyes at Goodison Park, has signed after a successful trial on Wearside.
He is likely to go straight into the squad for Sunday's Premier League derby with Middlesbrough.
However, Lee Cattermole will not be involved after undergoing surgery to repair a double hernia, and he could be sidelined for up to six weeks.
And centre-half Lamine Kone is missing with a back complaint. He has also refused the club's offer of a new contract.
Fellow defender Younès Kaboul is on his way to Watford after a bid of around £4m was accepted by Sunderland. Moyes gave permission to discuss terms after learning of his desire to return to the London area for personal reasons.
