SUNDERLAND (5-3-1-1):
5 Mannone: Was beaten four times, but still made good second-half saves from Gabbiadini, Tadic and Long
3 Jones: Suffered his most difficult afternoon of the season as Bertrand ran riot down Southampton’s left-hand side
3 Kone: His improvement at Palace was a distant memory as he stood off his opponents and got into some dreadful positions
4 O’Shea: His lack of pace and mobility was brutally exposed, leading to his departure at the half-time break
4 Denayer: Was left in an almost-impossible position when he scored his own goal, but didn’t look comfortable at any stage
5 Oviedo: Failed to match the levels he had produced at Selhurst Park, but was still the pick of a poor Sunderland defence
6 NDONG: Was the best player on the pitch for the opening 20 minutes, but couldn’t sustain those standards
5 Gibson: Started off reasonably effectively, but tired dramatically as he made his first Sunderland start
4 Larsson: Couldn’t get into the game at all and wasn’t able to provide any support to an isolated Defoe
4 Januzaj: Back to his most infuriating as he flitted around ineffectively and conceded possession on a regular basis
5 Defoe: It is on afternoons like this when the 34-year-old must wonder what on earth he is doing on Wearside – starved of service
Subs:
4 Pienaar (for O’Shea, 46): Failed to provide any kind of an attacking spark after the break, with his limitations all too obvious
4 Borini (for Larsson, 58): Was a bystander for most of his time on the field as Southampton sliced through the Sunderland midfield
Khazri (for Gibson, 81)
(not used): Mika (gk), Manquillo, Lescott, Honeyman.
SOUTHAMPTON (4-2-3-1):
Forster 7; Cedric 7, Stephens 8, Yoshida 7, BERTRAND 9; Romeu 7, Davis 6; Ward-Prowse 8, Tadic 8 (Hojbjerg 81), Redmond 7; Gabbiadini 8 (Long 72).
Subs (not used): Hassen (gk), Gardos, Sims, McQueen, Rodriguez.
Man Of The Match: RYAN BERTRAND - The Southampton full-back set up two of his side’s goals, and was effectively playing as a winger as he rampaged down the left-hand side.
