PATRICK VAN AANHOLT will have a medical at Crystal Palace later today after Sunderland officials finally rubber-stamped his move to Selhurst Park.

The Black Cats have agreed a deal that will see Palace make an initial down payment of £10m, with the price potentially rising to £14m if a series of clauses are met.

The Northern Echo:

Van Aanholt is already believed to be in London, and will complete a medical later today before finalising personal terms.

The Dutchman submitted a formal transfer request in order to force through his move to Palace.

Sunderland chief executive Martin Bain said: "If a player openly states he does not want to play for our club, then it is clear that we have a decision to make.

"In this instance and in regard to this particular player, we have done what we feel is right for Sunderland, which will always be our priority."

Van Aanholt joined Sunderland in a £1.5m move from Chelsea in the summer of 2014.

He will leave having made 95 senior appearances for the Black Cats, scoring eight goals in the process.

His three Premier League goals in the current campaign make him Sunderland's joint second-highest scorer with the injured Victor Anichebe.

The Black Cats are hoping to plug the gap left by his departure with a season-long loan for Bordeaux full-back Diego Contento.

Sunderland boss David Moyes has also inquired about Swansea's Neil Taylor, but Contento, who started his career with Bayern Munich, is currently the preferred option.
