SUNDERLAND are ready to pull the plug on attempts to lure Yann M’vila back to the Stadium of Light – unless there is a change of heart over his wages.

The Black Cats have found it difficult to prise the French midfielder away from Rubin Kazan, even though the Russian club want to offload him and he wants to leave.

M’Vila has six months remaining on his contract at Rubin and discussions to have the remaining term of his deal paid up have not found a solution.

That has meant Sunderland would have to pay more than they want to get him to Wearside, knowing he earns in excess of £100,000-a-week on his current deal.

He is looking for at least the six figure sum to move to Sunderland and that is substantially beyond what owner Ellis Short would normally pay for players.

Unless there is a change of heart from either club or the player then M’Vila will not be returning to form part of Sam Allardyce’s squad next season.

Sunderland have so far been unable to bring in a new faces despite plenty of calls, and it has emerged Sevilla’s midfielder Vicente Iborra has emerged as an alternative to M’Vila.

It was claimed in Spain that Sunderland are willing to pay around £8.2m for Iborra, although he could take some persuading as he is happy in Andalucia where he has enjoyed success.

Steven Fletcher, meanwhile, has joined Sheffield Wednesday on a four-year deal. The Scotland striker became a free agent after not having his contract renewed at Sunderland and he has had options from across Europe.

There were bids for his services from Turkey and Greece, as well as fresh talk that he could return to France where he was on loan with Marseille last season. But he has opted to spearhead the Owls’ promotion charge after being offered a lengthy deal.

Sunderland have successfully sold Santiago Vergini for £1.5m to Boca Juniors. The Argentine centre-back has returned to his homeland after an unsuccessful time in the Premier League.

Boca have tried for months to broker a deal and after reaching an agreement over a fee Vergini, 27, has revealed everything is sorted with his transfer.

He said: “It is a great joy and I’m very excited. I want to come to add and insert myself in the best way for the group, and bring the best.”

Vergini has 12 months left on his Sunderland contract but Allardyce was keen to move him on after he was due to return to the club following his loan with Getafe last season in Spain.
