SUNDERLAND have confirmed Sebastian Coates' departure on a season-long loan to Sporting Lisbon.

Coates has moved to the Portuguese capital for the remainder of the campaign, with an agreement understood to be in place for a €5m permanent deal in the summer.

The Uruguay international's departure was rubber-stamped after Lamine Kone joined Sunderland from Lorient yesterday, and he could make his Sporting debut in this weekend’s home game with Academica.

Coates arrived at the Stadium of Light in 2014, on an initial loan deal from Liverpool, before making the switch to Wearside permanent last summer. He leaves having made 32 senior appearances for the club.
