SUNDERLAND midfielder Charis Mavrias has joined German second-tier side Fortuna Dusseldorf on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old midfielder joined the Black Cats in 2013 from Greek side Panathinaikos.

He made his Sunderland debut as a second-half substitute in a 4-2 Capital One Cup win over MK Dons in the same season, but has been unable to hold down a place in the first team in the last two years.

He spent a large chunk of last season back at Panathinaikos on loan, and has become the latest fringe player to depart this month as Sam Allardyce attempts to create some space on the wage bill.
