Spennymoor Town 2 Blyth Spartans 1.

Spennymoor Town produced one of their best performances of the season to keep their promotion hopes alive and end the 12 match winning run of league leaders Blyth in a pulsating match at the Brewery Field tonight.

Moors deserved their win thanks to an all action display with Shane Henry outstanding in midfield, but they missed several chances to make the game safe in the last 20 minutes.

Blyth’s Luke Armstrong had the first effort of the game, when he turned well and fired straight at Moors keeper Dan Lowson, but Rob Ramshaw wasted a great chance when Nathan Fisher sent him racing clear, but he blazed his shot wide.

The hard working Glen Taylor put a more difficult chance on his left foot from the edge of the box off target.

Moors took the lead on 23 minutes, when they were awarded a free kick outside the box for a foul on Nathan Fisher, and Kallum Griffiths powerfully struck the ball over the wall, and even though Blyth keeper Paul Woolston got both hands to the ball, he couldn’t prevent it going into the net.

Moors made it 2-0 on 26 minutes when Fisher squeezed the ball into the box for Jamie Chandler to run on and fire past Woolston.

Henry nearly made it three in five minutes, but he scooped his shot over the bar from a knockdown by James Curtis.

Blyth almost bounced back, and Lowson pulled off two good saves in quick succession from Dan Maguire and Jarret Rivers.

At the start of the second half, Blyth cranked up the pressure, and Lowson pulled off a point blank save from Luke Armstrong, but Moors nearly grabbed a third at the other end when Rob Ramshaw crossed for Johnson to send a diving header straight into Woolston’s hands.

Blyth replied with a header by Ryan Hutchinson from a corner that went just over the top, and they managed to pull a goal back on 68 minutes, when Dan Maguire turned quickly inside the Moors box and beat Lowson with a low shot.

Matty Pattison nearly equalised with a dipping left foot shot that landed on the roof of the net, but Moors missed a great chance to finish it when David Dowson crossed from the left, and Taylor set up Chandler who somehow hit the bar from a yard out.

And Moors missed another chance when Adam Mitchell found Chandler, whose shot was blocked by Woolston, then Curtis headed a corner against the bar.

In stoppage time, Taylor got clean through, but Woolston saved well.

Spennymoor: Lowson, Griffiths, Mason, Chandler, Tait, Curtis, Ramshaw, Henry, Taylor, Fisher (sub Dowson 74), Johnson (sub Mitchell 63).

Subs: White, Anderson, Armstrong.
