South Shields pulled off a surprise when they beat Gateshead 3-2 in the Durham Challenge Cup tonight.
Shields took the lead when Gateshead defender Matt McCarthy put a Wayne Phillips corner into his own goal, but Michack Kanda levelled for Gateshead.
David Foley restored Shields’ lead when he dribbled through the Gateshead defence and fired home on 31 minutes, but Kanda levelled again from a Craig Baxter cross.
However, Lewis Teasdale got the winner for Shields midway through the second half from a Robbie Briggs pass.
In the other Durham Challenge Cup tie, Whickham beat Sunderland RCA 2-0, with goals by Steven Aiston and Mark Fitzpatrick.
In the ENL Second Division, Crook dropped to fifth bottom after they were beaten 2-1 at home by Alnwick.
James Jackson gave Alnwick the lead, but Jonathan Wright levelled for Crook before halftime. Josh Hay, making his debut for Alnwick, scored the winner in the second half.
