Dunston UTS manager Billy Irwin said that he’s pleased that their replay will be on grass after they came back from Ashford United with a 1-1 draw in the fifth round of the Vase on Saturday.

Dunston have played their last three Vase ties on artificial surfaces, and they will replay on grass for a place in the last eight this Saturday.

“We’re pleased to be in the competition still. Obviously we don’t play at home on artificial surfaces, but we’ve had to get used to them in recent weeks. We beat Seaham Red Star at Consett, won at Coleshill and then drew at Ashford.

“We didn’t get started for about half an hour, and I had a bit of a go at the players at half time.

“I thought that we should have won it in the second half, and then in extra time I was worried that our legs would give up, but credit to the players, they kept battling away.”

Ashford took the lead after 11 minutes with a good header by Shaun Welford from a Taser Hassan cross, but Dunston slowly got more into the game and Stephen Richardson almost equalised before half time, but was denied by the Ashford keeper.

Dunston levelled just after the hour when Malky Morien burst through, rounded the keeper, and set up Aristotle Guerin-Lokonga to tap in the equaliser.

While Dunston’s dreams of glory are still alive, those of Newton Aycliffe and Sunderland RCA have ended.

Aycliffe were way below their best when they were beaten 5-0 at Camberley in Surrey, and manager Peter Dixon said; “It was a very disappointing performance, and I’ve got no qualms about the result at all. I honestly don’t know why they players were so below par – take nothing away from Camberley, they got what they deserved.”

Bobby Dormer hit the Aycliffe crossbar before Camberley took the lead through Matt Bunyan just before half time, and they scored four times in the second half through Rob Lazarczuk (2), Jay Hubbard and Perry Coles.

Aycliffe finished the game with ten men after Ashley Coffey was shown red for allegedly spitting at an opponent when the score was 3-0.

Sunderland RCA had a last eight place in their sights against Bristol Manor Farm when they led 2-1 at one stage, but they lost 3-2 at Meadow Park.

Sunderland RCA manager Marty Swales said; “I’m gutted, because I couldn’t see us losing when we led twice. We missed chance after chance to make the game safe, and their keeper pulled off two worldies. Their winner bounced into the net off somebody’s knee.

“I didn’t think Bristol were as good as some of the other teams that we’ve beaten. But we have to learn from today, and come back stronger next season. We’re setting our sights on the Durham Challenge Cup now.”

The RCA took the lead on 37 minutes with a header by Wayne Buchanan from a Luke Proctor cross, but prolific striker Dean Stamp levelled for Bristol with the RCA appealing for offside.

Buchanan restored the RCA’s lead with a volley that went in off the bar, but Pete Sheppard levelled with a good finish for Bristol, then Stamp fired the winner with seven minutes left.

The game between Morpeth and North Shields was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch, and has been re-arranged for tonight at Shields.
