North Shields 2 Glossop North End 1.

North Shields came from behind to win the FA Vase for the first time in their history when they came from behind to beat Glossop at Wembley.

It was the second time that Shields had come from behind at Wembley, they did the same against Sutton United in the Amateur Cup in 1969.

The victory was all the more remarkable because Shields almost went out of existence 23 years ago; they only won promotion to the Northern League first division last year, and they weren’t even included in the betting until the second half of the season.

Shields’ win was the sixth by a NL club in the last seven years.

Glossop played the last 15 minutes of extra time with ten men after their skipper, Dave Young, suffered concussion, and was prevented from continuing by the Wembley doctor.

There was an early scare for Shields in the third minute when a long clearance by Glossop keeper Greg Hall found Tom Bailey inside the Shields penalty area, but Stuart Donnison just got back and eased him off the ball.

The first real chance came on 13 minutes when Glossop right back Michael Bowler made a quick break down the right and crossed for Kieran Lugsden, who headed straight at Chris Bannon from six yards out.

Glossop had more joy down the right on 19 minutes when Bowler crossed deep for Tom Bailey, who headed on to the roof of the net.

Shields had their first chance on 23 minutes when John Grey’s header from a right wing corner was blocked by Hall at his near post.

Glossop nearly scored from their first corner on 34 minutes, when Bannon could only palm an inswinging corner to the feet of Dave Young, who hooked the ball over the bar from ten yards out.

Shields nearly took the lead on 42 minutes when for the first time in the game Vase specialist Gareth Bainbridge found space to run at the Glossop defence, and forced a diving save to the keeper’s left by Hall.

And at the other end a mistake by Kevin Hughes let in Kieran Lugsden, but Bannon was alert enough to block with his feet.

Shields nearly broke the deadlock three minutes after the restart when Ben Richardson created space for himself 25 yards out, and hit a right foot shot that flew over Hall but struck the crossbar.

In Shields’ next attack, Dean Holmes made good ground up the left and set up Michael McKeown, whose left foot effort was pushed over the bar by Hall.

But it was Glossop who took the lead on 54 minutes. A corner came in from the left that Shields didn’t clear. Glossop had a penalty shout when Lee Blackshaw went down under a challenge, and as Shields hesitated, Kieran Lugsden drove the ball across the six yard box for Bailey to slide home.

It was nearly 2-0 when Richardson clumsily lost possession, Bailey crossed from the right and Kieran Lugsden headed wide.

Shields levelled in the 80th minute. A corner was curled over from the right, and Bainbridge got away from his marker to head the ball past the stranded Hall for his 17th Vase goal of the season.

There was a frantic end to the 90 minutes. John Parker made a last ditch tackle on Kieran Lugsden, and Bannon smothered Kelvin Lugsden’s shot from close range, while Shields had a free kick five yards outside the box that they wasted.

Four minutes into extra time, Shields took the lead. Morris, who had a good first half, broke down the right and crossed into the middle where Bainbridge couldn’t quite connect, but behind him was sub Adam Forster, who cleverly kept his balance and turned the ball right footed past Hall.

Bannon made a good save low down to his left to hold a low shot by Kieran Lugsden, who also volleyed wide.

Glossop then lost their skipper Dave Young to concussion which caused great concern at one point and a long delay. Young briefly came back on the field, but was asked by the ref to leave the field again on a doctor’s advice. He was seen remonstrating loudly to medical staff.

Shields took control in the second period and kept possession, even though Hall played as a striker for the last two minutes.
