Shildon took a wrong turning on their way to Padiham for their FA preliminary round tie on Saturday – but Mark Hudson put them in the right direction in an excellent win.

The Railwaymen took over three and a half hours to reach Padiham in Lancashire, because they took a wrong turn on the moors and didn’t reach the ground until less than an hour before kick off.

Manager Gary Forrest said; “All our plans for our match preparation went out the window, and we feared the worst because the players had been so long on the bus.

“But they were excellent, and allowed Padiham only one shot throughout the whole of the game.”

The only goal of the game was in the first half, when Bobby Moore was tripped in the area, and Mark Hudson tucked away the penalty for his sixth goal of the season.

Shildon could have had more, as Moore hit the post, and Ben wood missed two good chances.

Padiham almost equalised when keeper Lewis Graham parried an effort, and defender Carl Jones somehow managed to stop the follow up attempt.

Shildon will now be at home to Whitby in the next round.

Marske had an excellent day out, winning 4-1 at Armthorpe in South Yorkshire.

Marske manager Carl Jarrett said; “It was a very pleasing performance. We put the game to bed after 18 minutes, and after that we took our foot off the pedal and controlled the rest of the game.”

Marske settled into the game straight away, and took the lead when Reece Kelly cut in from the left and fired past the Armthorpe keeper, then Jamie Owens ran through the defence and slotted in the second. When a home defender put Kelly’s cross into his own net for the third, only 20 minutes had gone. Kelly scored the fourth just after half time following a 1-2 with Freddie Woodhouse. Armthorpe pulled a goal back, but then had a man sent off.

West Allotment had a good away win over Knaresborough, winning 1-0. The goal came from a penalty by Sean Reid, who also missed a second spot kick. Knaresborough had a man sent off before half time, but near the end Allotment’s Mark Fenwick was shown red.

West Allotment manager Paul Stoneman said; “We bossed the game in the first 25 minutes and went a goal up and were comfortable. Then they had a man sent off and it turned a bit scrappy, It went 10 v 10 with 20 minutes to go, but we saw the game out without too much threat. We deserved the win without a doubt.”

Newcastle Benfield had a good 0-0 draw with EvoStik League Kendal and replay on Tuesday night.

Newcastle Benfield manager Neil Saxton said; “In difficult conditions the lads were spot on. I was really pleased with the performance.”

Bishop Auckland had a hugely entertaining 4-4 draw with Jarrow Roofing.

Glen Lane got them off to a great start with a well taken goal into the top corner, but Lewis Teasdale levelled for Roofing when he dribbled through and fired past Scott Pocklington.

The Bishops defence was again embarrassed when Paul Gardiner made it 2-1 with a deflected shot, but they stormed back at the other end. Sean Tarling levelled with a good shot, then Stuart Thompson made it 3-2 with a curler. Roofing equalised with a hotly disputed penalty when Jonathan Wright went down, and Teasdale scored from the spot. Just after half time, Thompson fired the fourth, but Roofing levelled again with a header by Dan Kirkup.

The teams try again on Tuesday night.

Jarrow Roofing manager Richie McLoughlin said; “I’m happy with a draw. It was a good game and some great goals, so looking ahead to the replay.”

Bishop Auckland manager David Bayles said; “All four of heir goals could have been avoided, but we had enough chances to win two games. I was very disappointed that we didn’t see it out. We were unhappy with the penalty that was given against us, but we can’t blame the ref for the total outcome.”

Consett won their local derby by 2-0 over Whickham at Belle View. They took the lead with a disputed penalty on 44 minutes through Michael Mackay after Calvin Smith was brought down, then former Darlington winger Chris Moore got the second with a 25 yarder.

Consett manager Kenny Lindoe said; “It was a windspoilt game. We scored in each half and controlled the game from start to finish.”

Whickham manager Robin Falcus said; “The better team won, we have no complaints. We got to a minute before half time and the ref gave a penalty that never was. We kept it tight in the second half hoping to nick one but we conceded on 93 minutes after chasing a goal ourselves. The ref showed my players and our club in general no respect at all.”

Dunston UTS easily beat Durham City 3-0 at the UTS stadium.

Scott Fenwick fired Dunston into the lead from the edge of the box after 9 minutes, then Andy Bulford made it 2-0 from a pass by Nicky Kane before half time. Fenwick scored his second of the game from a David Coulson assist.

Dunston manager Billy Irwin said; “Overall it was a good performance. Credit to the players, we’ve had a good week.”

Durham City manager Ian Chandler said; “It was a bad display in the first half when we didn’t play to the conditions and tried to play football in a fierce wind and contributed to our downfall. We improved in the second half but didn’t really threaten.”

However, three ENL clubs went out.

Seaham Red Star nearly gained a draw at Clitheroe after being 3-0 down at one point. It looked all over for them when they were 3-0 down on 70 minutes and keeper Shaun Newbrook had been shown red, but goals by Sonny Andrews and David Palmer gave them something to fight for.

Seaham Red Star manager Mark Collingwood said; “We went three down, then showed great character to get back into the game. We battered them in the last 20 minutes but to come back from 3-0 down was a huge ask. If the game had gone on for another five minutes , we would have scored again, even with ten men.”

Northallerton were beaten 3-0 at Bridlington, conceding all their goals in the second half, while Washington were easily beaten 7-0 at home by Lancaster City, who now go to West Allotment in the next round.

On Sunday, North Shields held EvoStik League Scarborough to a 1-1 draw. Shields took the lead through Dean Walker from a corner, but Scarborough levelled in the second half through Ben Middleton on 70 minutes.

Ashington came from behind to win 2-1 at Albion Sports, Marc Walton scoring twice in the space of four minutes in the second half.

The draw for the first qualifying round on September 13th is; Marske United v Dunston UTS; West Allotment Celtic v Lancaster City; West Auckland Town or Darlington v Blyth Spartans; Newcastle Benfield or Kendal Town v Bridlington Town;  Ashington v Scarborough Athletic or North Shields; Shildon v Whitby Town; Workington v Consett; Bishop Auckland or Jarrow Roofing v Spennymoor Town.
