Esh Winning succeeded where other EBAC Northern League clubs have failed when they beat Tadcaster Albion 3-2 in the first qualifying round of the FA Carlsberg Vase at Waterhouses on Saturday.

Esh weren’t fancied beforehand against a team from a level above them and had beaten Consett and Norton in the FA Cup, but Esh stunned the Northern Counties East League side by 3-2, after leading 3-0 going into stoppage time.

Esh manager Andrew Soppitt said: “Maybe Tadcaster thought that they would win easily after we lost 7-1 last week, but we proved them wrong. The players worked hard and scored a couple of good goals – in fact I thought we should have won by four or five. Once we scored the second goal, we coasted through the game.”

Jason Brazauskas gave them the lead when he beat two players and fired past the Tadcaster keeper, and they made it 2-0 when Darren Kokes pounced on a poor back pass and set up Brazauskas to tap in the second. Lee Farrington crossed for Gary Turton to get the third on the hour, and it was only in stoppage time when Tadcaster made any real impact on the game, when they scored twice.

Hebburn also beat another club that two Northern league clubs had failed against, in Holker Old Boys from the North West Counties League. Hebburn hit the post twice in the first half, and they took the lead after 12 minutes when Tony Stephenson burst through and slotted past the keeper, and a few minutes later David Borley scored from the spot after Stephenson was brought down. Conor Eldis pulled a goal back in the second half, but Hebburn held firm.

Darlington RA came from behind to beat Eccleshill from the NCEL by 2-1. The visitors took the lead through Brandon Roane on 31 minutes, but the RA levelled through Freddie Huscroft five minutes from the end of normal time.

In extra time, Steve Cheeseman went close for the RA, before Steve Allison fired the winner midway through the second period.

Darlington RA manager Nick Harrison said: “It was an awful game, we got through by the skin of our teeth.”

One of the surprises of the day was Seaham Red Star’s 2-1 home defeat by Wearside League club Willington. Seaham took the lead with a goal by Danny Grey, but they pressed the self destruct button with Michael Turnbull and keeper Shaun Newbrook both shown red. Willington levelled through an Andrew Richardson penalty on 66 minutes, and John Richardson got the winner on 77.

Seaham manager Mark Collingwood said: “ A lack of discipline let us down, and changes will be made because this was unacceptable.”

Stokesley won their first game in open play for two seasons when they won 3-0 at Thornaby . Ben Bonner gave Stokesley a half time lead, with Ross Hodgson and Tom Whaley scoring after the break.

Thornaby manager Ray Morton said: “No reaction apart from how poor we played. Best of luck to Stokesley in the next round.”

Jarrow Roofing came from behind to beat Brandon 7-4 after extra time. Roofing, who reached the semi finals of the competition seven years ago, looked as if they were going out when they trailed 4-3 going into stoppage time of normal time, even though they were 3-1 up at one point.

Dean Thexton (2), Anthony Myers (2) , Michael Hedley, David Molloy and Danny Carson scored for Roofing, with Andrew Blackburn, Scott Hine, Owen Lancaster and Liam Bowes on target for Brandon.

Jarrow Roofing manager Richie McLoughlin said: “We did good in the first half, but we were poor in the second half and let them take a 4-3 lead. Bit lucky to get back into it in stoppage time but we picked it up to win in extra time.”

A last minute clanger by Crook keeper Barry Poskett gifted Guisborough the winner at the King George. Poskett failed to control a throw in under pressure from Austin Johnston, who was left with a simple tap in. Crook took the lead with a 30 yarder by Warren Byrne on 56 minutes, but Guisborough levelled with a powerful header by Gary Wood on 72 minutes.

Crook manager Gary Pearson said: “it was a massive improvement on recent games , but individual errors cost us again.I felt as though we had done everything right with our shape and tactics. Then after a discussion at half time about who marks posts on corners, we let them back into the game, then on the stroke of 90 minutes our keeper totally miscontrolled a throw in to give them a goal.”

Guisborough manager Chris Hardy said: “I think the better side won on the day, but Crook will feel they deserved a draw and extra time.”

Billingham Town, who were forced to put outfield player Michael Arthur in goal, lost 3-1 at home to Pickering from the NCEL, after taking an early lead. Matthew Garbutt put them into the lead after Micky Dunwell and Craig Norman both had shots blocked, but Pickering equalised through Neil Shepherd from a 25 yard free kick. Liam Salt made it 2-1 to the visitors from the penalty spot, and after Micky Dunwell hit the post for Town, Tom Fenwick scored the third for the visitors.

North Shields went out 2-1 at Liversedge, even though they took the lead through Adam Rowntree. Liversedge equalised in the last minute of normal time, and won the game in the last minute of extra time.

Marske United and Morpeth must replay on Wednesday night after they drew 2-2 at Mount Pleasant, but that was only because of a last minute equaliser in extra time by Marske’s David Onions. Connor Wilson and Tom Andrews scored for Morpeth, with Leon Carling scoring the other goal for Marske.

Celtic Nation easily beat Birtley 4-0, with goals by Michael Reed, Tyran Taylor, Marc Shiel and Dean Renyard.

Celtic Nation manager Steve Skinner said: “It was a small improvement from Monday. We played well in bits and showed that extra quality.”

Birtley manager Scott Oliver said: “I was disgusted with the performance. We had key players out, but the goals we conceded were a joke. I’m fuming.”

Consett also brushed aside Alnwick, who have still to score in all competitions this season. Harrison Davies, Liam Sullivan, Calvin Smith and Michael Mackay (2) were the scorers.

West Allotment easily lost 5-1 at home to Thackley, Sean Reid scoring their goal.

West Allotment manager Paul Stoneman said: “We got what we deserved. For 35 minutes we were fine then two soft goals before half time killed us. In the second half we were ok for 15 minutes but no complaints – the better team won.”

The tie between Tow Law and Penrith was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch, and has been re-arranged for Wednesday night at Ironworks Road.

The draw for the second qualifying round on September 15th is: Shildon v Liversedge , Esh Winning v Albion Sports, Silsden v Northallerton , Chester-le-Street v Norton, Marske United or Morpeth v Whitehaven, Willington v Newton Aycliffe , Ryton and Crawcrook v Bishop Auckland , Stokesley v Guisborough, Tow Law or Penrith v Horden, Pickering v Team Northumbria, Thackley v Celtic Nation, Washington v Jarrow Roofing, Yorkshire Amateurs v South Shields , Bedlington v Darlington RA, Consett v Hebburn.
