FABRICIO COLOCCINI has expressed his “anger” at Newcastle’s below-par display at West Ham, and admitted that he and his team-mates are repeating many of the mistakes that proved so costly last season.

The Magpies were comprehensively outplayed as two goals from Dimitri Payet sent them crashing to the foot of the Premier League table and extended their winless start to the season to five matches.

It is now more than 400 minutes since Newcastle scored a league goal, while at the other end of the field, they continue to be picked apart far too easily by a range of opposition.

Last season, John Carver presided over a run of ten games without a victory before a final-day win over West Ham secured survival, and Coloccini is concerned to see some of the failings that contributed to that run rearing their head once again.

“I don’t care much about the position in the table, because it’s the beginning of the season and we have a long way to go,” said the Newcastle skipper. “But I’m a bit disappointed (about the West Ham defeat, because we didn’t play well.

“We didn’t do the things that we’ve been doing for the last four games. I’m disappointed about that.

“We can’t accept the same problems we had last season, and I think all the team are angry now. But we’ll try to look forward to the next game.”

That game pits Newcastle against Watford at St James’ Park on Saturday, and having benefited from some strong support from the stands in the opening weeks of the season, Coloccini is urging his side’s supporters to continue to stick with their new-look team.

“They’ve been fantastic,” he said. “They support the team, and hopefully (on Saturday) we can do something for them.”
