JONJO SHELVEY eased himself back into action this evening as he helped Newcastle Under-23s claim a 2-2 draw with Norwich City.

Shelvey has been sidelined since the opening weekend of the season as he was forced to serve a three-match ban for his dismissal against Tottenham and was an unused substitute in Sunday’s 1-0 win at Swansea City.

He was named in last night’s development side to help improve his match fitness, and played the full 90 minutes as he pressed his claims for a return to the senior line-up when Newcastle host Stoke City in the Premier League this weekend.

He was involved from the outset last night, with an audacious seventh-minute effort from inside his own half drifting narrowly wide.

The midfielder helped set up Newcastle’s opener as he sparked a slick passing move that eventually ended with Luke Charman sweeping home.

The Magpies doubled their lead two minutes later, with centre-half Macauley Gillesphey rising highest to head home Dan Barlaser’s corner.

Shelvey came close to adding a third goal midway through the first half, but Norwich hauled themselves back into the game four minutes after the interval as Devonte Aransibia drilled past Freddie Woodman.

The Canaries levelled with seven minutes left, with Adam Phillips converting from the penalty spot after substitute Josef Yarney blocked Aransibia in the box.

Newcastle: Woodman, Sterry (O’Connor 46), Good (Yarney 72), Gillesphey, Cameron, Barlaser, Shelvey, Roberts, Charman, L Smith, Aarons (Fernandez 46).
