Goal:

0-1 Mitrovic (44, sidefooted home from four yards after Lascelles squared when Diame flicked on Shelvey's free kick)

Referee: Craig Pawson (South Yorkshire) - criticised for failing to send off Mitrovic, while his assistant could have helped him by flagging Lascelles offside for the goal. Interrupted the game with a stream of free kicks for petty fouls. 6

WOLVERHAMPTON (4-2-3-1): Ikeme 7; Coady 6, Batth 6, Stearman 7, Doherty 7; Edwards 6, Price 6 (Evans 46, 6); Costa 7, Enobakhare 6 (Bodvarsson 61, 6), Weimann 6 (Marshall 75, 5); Dicko 6. Subs (not used): Burgoyne (gk), Saville, Hause, Ronan.

NEWCASTLE (4-4-1-1):

7 Darlow: Didn't have a save to make but kept a second successive clean sheet with a string of catches from crosses late on as Wolves pressed for an equaliser.

7 Yedlin: Had his work cut out against the busy Weimann which limited his attacking forays, but stuck to his task well and made several telling challenges.

7 Lascelles: Wasn't as busy as his defensive partner Clark, but was just as reliable as they repelled any number of crosses, especially in the second half.

8 Clark: Had to be on his toes to keep tabs on the pacy Dicko, but marshalled him well to keep him quiet and also won plenty of headers as the crosses rained in.

6 Dummett: Largely restricted as he had to keep a close eye on Costa after the winger switched flanks early on but never wavered.

7 Ritchie: Started well and his movement and passing caused Wolves a few problems. But he also did a sterling job for the team by tracking back.

8 Shelvey: Ran the game despite running the gauntlet of abuse from Wolves fans who taunted his every touch. Had the vision to split the opposition open and set up the goal.

7 Colback: Missed a sitter in the third minute after showing intelligent movement to get into the position. But put the setback behind him to grow into the game after that.

6 Gouffran: Offered decent service t Mitrovic and Diame when he could but was often forced to defend due to the raids of Coady.

8 Diame: A thorn in Wolves' side throughout, popping in between the lines. Had a hand in the goal and also threatened in the second half.

7 Mitrovic: Scored the only goal after being booked and was perhaps lucky to have stayed on the pitch after his studs-up lunge on Ikeme.

Subs

6 Atsu (for Mitrovic 46): Didn't get much chance to show what he could do as Newcastle sat back in the second half.

6 Murphy (for Ritchie 82): Offered a different kind of threat for the last few minutes but didn't really get into the game.

5 Perez (for Diame 88): A late change as Newcastle tried to run down the clock and couldn't get into the match.

(not used): Elliot (gk), Hanley, Hayden, Gamez.

MAN OF THE MATCH:

Jonjo Shelvey: Despite the persistent abuse he endured throughout the game, he not only kept his head but ran the game. His free kick set up the goal and he also provided the assist for Colback.
