ALAN SHEARER has given Rafael Benitez a big thumbs up for the work at St James’ Park so far, as the Newcastle United manager looks for a result that could secure top spot in the Championship tonight.

The Magpies will head to Barnsley backed by a travelling support of 6,000 knowing victory could see them topple leaders Norwich City at the top of the table.

The buzz on Tyneside is being maintained despite suffering relegation from the Premier League in May and that is largely down to the knock-on effect of Benitez agreeing to stay in charge.

Newcastle legend Shearer met up with Benitez during the international break for coffee and the Spaniard was interested to hear if there is anything he is not already aware of that could help – and the former England striker has given him the seal of approval.

Benitez said: “I spent some time with him and asked him for some advice because he has experience: he knows the fans, the club, the city and everything.

“It was more asking him advice - please, tell me if we have made any mistakes. He was fine, he said it is going well so far.

“He said we are doing well and going in the right direction. He was happy to see the club going in the right direction. He was supportive. He's happy with the way things are going on.”
