NEWCASTLE UNITED have appealed against Vurnon Anita's dismissal in Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Wolves.

Anita received a straight red card in the final minutes of Saturday's game at St James' Park, with referee Tim Robinson penalising the full-back for a foul on Ivan Cavaleiro.

Anita had one foot off the floor as he attempted to tackle his opponent, but Magpies boss Rafael Benitez feels the Dutchman did not make contact with the Wolves substitute.

Newcastle have submitted a formal appeal, with Anita set to face an automatic three-match ban, and expect to learn the Football Association's decision tomorrow morning.

Benitez said: "Yes, we will appeal. It wasn't with the studs it was a little bit lateral.

"He didn't touch the player but in football sometimes you have a point of view and maybe it's different to the reality."

Newcastle renew rivalries with Wolves in the third round of the EFL Cup tomorrow, with Benitez set to make a number of changes to his team.

Daryl Murphy and Achraf Lazaar will both come into contention for their Newcastle debut, with Karl Darlow set to take over from Matz Sels in goal.

Benitez said: "I want to keep everybody on their toes and thinking they can help and make a difference, and now with Anita's sending off, everyone has to be ready."

It is unusual for two sides to meet each other twice within the space of four days, and while Benitez is expecting the general pattern of tomorrow's game to be similar to Saturday's, he is confident there will be a different outcome.

He said: "Wolves will try to do a similar thing. They won the last game with a certain approach, it depends on us, whether we make the same mistakes.

"Maybe Wolves will change players and tactics but the main thing for me is what we do.

"You have an advantage because you know them, but they will change players, hopefully we can change the final score.

"The most important lesson is that we have to manage the games in front of our fans and we need to be ready for that. We need to be together, united so that we can bring the best from every single player."
