NEWCASTLE UNITED are confident of landing Everton full-back Brendan Galloway by the end of the week, but will have to pay a hefty loan fee to get things tied up.

The 20-year-old defender has been earmarked as the left-back Rafael Benitez wants to compete with Paul Dummett for that role in the Championship this season.

Negotiations are at an advanced stage with the Toffees who are looking for a payment of more than £1m that will see Galloway spend the campaign at St James’ Park.

Newcastle have not agreed to pay that so far, but discussions are continuing and Newcastle are hoping to get their man before the visit of Huddersfield on Saturday afternoon.

The deal will also mean the Magpies having to cover his reported £20,000-a-week wages, but Benitez is confident he will be perfectly suited to what he is trying to do at St James’ Park.

Newcastle are looking for a lift on the training ground after last Friday night’s frustrating start to life in the Championship when they lost 1-0 at Fulham.

Benitez described the result and performance as a “wake-up call” and he is attempting this week to rectify the errors that were evident at Craven Cottage.

It also highlighted to him further that he needs to add a new winger and a striker to the squad before the end of the month, with options short in that department.

Striker Adam Armstrong had to be used in the hope of cancelling out Matt Smith’s opener rather than a more experienced member of the squad, with Serbian Aleksandar Mitrovic sidelined through suspension and Emmanuel Riviere interesting a number of clubs in Europe.

Siem de Jong would have been an alternative option to play the No 10 role after Ayoze Perez struggled to make an impact, but the Dutchman has been recovering from the hamstring problem that forced him to return early from the club’s pre-season trip to Ireland last month.

De Jong has hardly figured since making a £6m move from Ajax two years ago largely due to injury problems. The 27-year-old is attracting interest from PSV Eindhoven, although no talks have taken place over a move.

He remains a few weeks away from fitness but PSV are keen to give him a chance to revive his career in Holland; a season long loan rather than a permanent deal is more likely at this stage.

Armstrong, meanwhile, has told Benitez he intends to fight for his place this season at Newcastle but that has not stopped Scottish Premier League new-boys Rangers from asking to take him on loan.

Rangers have been in touch to try to lure him to Ibrox for the season and Benitez is open to the idea, having suggested to the teenager they will revisit the situation in a few weeks.

Armstrong was a success when he was at Coventry last season and they had hoped to take him back to the Ricoh Stadium, but the England Under-19s international had hoped to be given a chance to shine in the Championship.

That could still happen under Benitez, who did introduce him as a second half substitute at Fulham, but Armstrong will have to deliver quickly if he is to avoid being moved out on loan before the end of the month.
