YOAN GOUFFRAN had no problem with Club Atlas’ competitive spirit as Newcastle United got their American tour off to a losing start.

Atlas took a 2-1 victory in Milwaukee in the early hours of Wednesday morning, with the Magpies setting off for Sacramento yesterday ahead of their game against USL outfit Sacramento Republic.

And, with the tackles flying in, Gouffran had no complaints about Atlas’ approach. "Their first game is next week, so they have to be competitive," the Frenchman told Newcastle’s club website.

"Sometimes there was some strong tackles and some bad kicks but it was good for us because the Premier League is the same - very tough and physical.

"So it is the same type of game and helps get us ready for the new season in England.

"It was a good game. We lost but I think we did well overall. Yes, we conceded two goals in the first 20 minutes but after that we were much better and we are working hard to be fit. This game will be good for us.

"Pre-season is all about finding fitness and doing the right things on the pitch.

"We feel better day after day, week after week. We are getting fitter. Some players played 70 minutes tonight and we feel good."

Gouffran is enjoying life under new head coach Steve McClaren and the backroom team which the former Middlesbrough boss has assembled.

"It is different but good," he said.

"They want to play well and want us to show good things all the time.

"He wants us to pass the ball and that will suit the players we have. It is a very good idea."
