DANIEL Barlaser celebrated his first professional contract at Newcastle United with a goal in last night’s development game, but the midfielder’s strike could not prevent a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal.
Gateshead-born Barlaser, who is a Turkey under-19 international, has been on Newcastle’s books since the age of nine and has followed in Callum Roberts’ footsteps by signing a long-term senior deal with the Magpies.
He was on target in last night’s Under-21s game at St James’ Park, driving home a rebound in the second half after Arsenal goalkeeper Deyan Iliev parried Adam Armstrong’s strike.
Barlaser’s goal cancelled out Alex Iwobi’s first-half shot, but after Tom Heardman dragged a 73rd-minute shot wide, Arsenal struck a winner in the final minute.
Substitute Austin Lipman headed home Aaron Eyoma’s cross to condemn a Newcastle side featuring Curtis Good and Lubo Satka to defeat.
