The 65-year-old boasts a wealth of experience, having managed Hearts, Stoke City and Bristol City.
He has also worked alongside Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth, Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers, as well as with Lawrie McMenemy at Northern Ireland.
As a player, he made over 450 league appearances, featuring for the likes of Leeds United, Manchester United, and AC Milan.
The former Scotland international has joined Agnew as part of a wider training-ground reshuffle that has seen three members of Aitor Karanka's backroom team depart.
Goalkeeping coach Marcos Abad, who has been standing in for Leo Percovich, has left, along with analysts Juanjo Vila and Guillermo Salinas.
