MARTEN DE ROON has been rewarded for his impressive Middlesbrough form with a call-up for his country.

The Premier League rookie scored his first goal since his £12m move from Atalanta in the summer at Manchester City last weekend.

His stunning header from George Friend's cross sealed a point for Middlesbrough against Pep Guardiola's side and it got him noticed by Holland boss Danny Blind.

De Roon has now been drafted into the Netherlands squad, along with Swansea's Leroy Fer, after injuries to Jeremain Lens, Vincent Janssen and Stijn Schaars.

The 25-year-old has never been called into the Holland senior squad before al though he was part of the Under-19s set-up during his time playing in the Eredivisie.

Blind, who could play him against Luxembourg on Sunday, said earlier this week: "He is a great lad to have in your team. He is watched frequently. He sacrifices himself and thinks about the team’s interest."
