AITOR KARANKA was remaining tight-lipped over when more signings will arrive at Middlesbrough after watching summer recruit Viktor Fischer make a first appearance for the club.

Fischer, signed from Ajax in a £3.8m deal when the transfer window opened, played the second half as Boro beat Doncaster Rovers 2-0 in a summer friendly.

The Danish winger joined £12m midfielder Marten de Roon in the side at the Keepmoat Stadium, while former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes watched from the sidelines.

Middlesbrough expect to confirm a deal for Gaston Ramirez in the next 48 hours, while Borussia Dortmund’s Neven Subotic will arrive subject to a work permit.

Valencia striker Alvaro Negredo’s season long loan should also go ahead and he will join Antonio Barragan, who joined in a £2.5m deal on Friday.

But Karanka said: “I don’t know (about more). I am just focused on the pitch and the club is working on the other business. Of course I would like and expect more new signings.

“For me it is important to work with the players we have now. It is not my concern to think of those we have not got. At the moment it is not a concern for me, I am focused on the players I have.”

Barragan, 29, is the sixth signing since promotion from the Championship and Karanka’s message is that Middlesbrough have to be ready to stay in the top-flight by landing the quality additions.

“Barragan is a really good player, he is a great squad player,” said Karanka. “He maybe doesn’t have the name of some of the others flying around but he is just as important.

“The main things is to add players who want to come here and it is really nice for me to have players like that. It is nice to have more players like who we had here last season and last pre-season.

“We need to build a squad for the Premier League. I said last week that the club is working really well and we have to be focused on the pitch.

"The better players we have, the more players we have, the greater chances we have of doing well next season.”

Stewart Downing’s 12th minute opener at Doncaster was followed by a fine solo effort from local teenager Alex Pattison nine minutes from time.

It wasn’t a convincing display from the team, but Karanka is not concerned and is pleased to have had Fisher and Valdes with him in south Yorkshire.

“Coming here they know they have joined a good squad,” said Karanka, who fielded five academy graduates at Doncaster.

“For example today we didn’t have Victor Valdes, or Cristhian Stuani, players who are ready to play, but they wanted to come here with the team and watch. They wanted to get into the atmosphere because they know it is important.

“The young ones were good too. It was motivation for them, it’s an alarm for the other players to know that we have good players in the academy and that they want to play in the first team.”

Karanka, meanwhile, revealed Albert Adomah will be going to Marbella with the squad after missing out at Doncaster with a knock.
