IT was a tale of two Vic(k)tors at the Keepmoat Stadium where Middlesbrough secured a second pre-season win a row ahead of Monday’s trip to Marbella.

While Victor Valdes, the former Barcelona goalkeeper, was just a spectator from the sidelines for Boro, Viktor Fischer made his first appearance for the club since his £3.8m move form Ajax.

It had been expected that Valdes, after signing from Manchester United before the York friendly a week ago, would appear against Doncaster but he was not involved in either half. Tomas Mejias and Dimi Konstantopoulos shared duties between the posts.

Mejias did have to make a half decent save to deny Joe Pugh, whose volley from 18 yards was well held by the Spaniard, but after that it was pretty smooth running against the League Two new-boys.

And after Stewart Downing, who had already gone close with a low drive well held by Doncaster goalkeeper Ross Etheridge, had seen a 12th minute effort deflect off Andy Butler into the net to put Middlesbrough ahead, the 1,118 travelling fans just waited for a glimpse of a couple of other new recruits.

After head coach Aitor Karanka, who did not include latest signing Antonio Barragan after joining from Valencia, had made a complete team of changes at the break, Danish winger Fischer was introduced to the left flank.

Fischer showed a few nice touches, without displaying the sort of quality that has made him one of his country’s hottest prospects.

Marten de Roon, who played against York in the 6-0 win, was also at the hub of the midfield alongside Julien de Sart, got some more minutes under his belt following a £12m move from Atalanta.

It was a typical early pre-season fixture, with fitness more of an issue than the actual performance, but Middlesbrough did have a couple more efforts, including an effort from Adam Reach which went close.

Jordan Rhodes, who was a half-time replacement for David Nugent, saw an effort deflect over the bar from eight yards deep into the second half.

Middlesbrough did add a second with nine minutes remaining and it was from one of the five academy graduates on show.

Alex Pattison – who also went close to adding a second - showed his potential by cleverly cutting inside in the penalty box before curling inside the far post.

They will not focus on adding Alvaro Negredo, Gaston Ramirez and Neven Subotic to the ranks over the next week or so in Spain before the Premier League starts on August .
