FORMER Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes could be on his way to Middlesbrough after talks with the club.

The experienced 34-year-old shot-stopper has other offers on the table from abroad, but the prospect of playing in the Premier League appeals to him and he is understood to be due for a medical on Thursday.

Valdes has already met head coach Aitor Karanka and more detailed discussions are due to take place between the player’s representatives and Boro’s financial decision makers.

Valdes was released by Manchester United this summer after a spell on loan at Standard Liege and never really had the opportunity to shine at Old Trafford because of a fall out with Louis van Gaal.

Valdes won everything with Barcelona but has struggled for first team football since leaving Camp Nou in 2014 after 387 league appearances.

Now he is considering a switch to Premier League new-boys Middlesbrough where he would work under compatriot Aitor Karanka.

He will be battling with Dimi Konstantopoulos and Tomas Mejias for a first team shirt if the move goes through.

Karanka has looked at a number of goalkeepers this summer including Matz Sels, who joined Newcastle for £4.5m, and Keiren Westwood. Valdes is, though, available on a free transfer, although he could command significant wages, which he could pull in if he moved to Turkey where Besiktas are interested. Sporting Lisbon are known to be another keen, as well as clubs in Spain.

Valdes fuelled the talk about his future by following Middlesbrough on Twitter along with the only other three clubs he has previously played for.
