MIDDLESBROUGH have taken command of the UEFA Youth League second round tie with Italian side Torino after an impressive display at the Riverside.

Boro will head to Turin on November 24 with a handsome 3-0 advantage after a stirring Bonfire Night performance which lit up the Teesside club’s home.

Middlesbrough’s Under-19s, coached by former Darlington boss Craig Liddle and Hartlepool midfielder Mark Tinkler, had to be patient to get the result after failing to find the vital breakthrough until the 77th minute.

There were chances at both ends, with the home side enjoying the better, but Liddle’s boys could not find a way to edge ahead, even though they included Austrian striker Arnel Jakupovic in their line-up after his scoring debut against Blackburn on Saturday.

Middlesbrough finally found the net 13 minutes from time. Junior Mondal picked up the ball and after creating space for himself his excellent shot was deflected high over the Torino keeper.

The second did not take long to arrive either. The lively Harry Chapman fed Hayden Coulson down the left and the substitute calmly finished beyond the keeper.

With Torino on the back foot, Middlesbrough sensed they could score more and they saved the best for last, This time Hartlepool-born Chapman, who had been a thorn in the Italian side all night, displayed all of his magic to show why he has had a host of Premier League clubs looking at him.

The birthday boy, who turned 18 on the same day, picked up possession on the left, embarrassed a couple of Torino players by the byline before somehow finding a way to beat the keeper from a tight angle with the most brilliant of chips.

Now Middlesbrough will look to impress in the return leg at the Stadio Olimpico, where the Championship club have a big chance to claim a place in the group stage of the completion. Middlesbrough: Dawson; Johnson, McGinley, Wheatley, Fry, Elsdon, Cooke, Pattison, Jakupovic, Chapman, Mondal. Subs: Pears, Tavernier, Coulson, McGoldrick, Hetherington, Curry, Liddle.
