STEWART DOWNING will undergo a medical on Teesside tomorrow after Middlesbrough finally agreed the payment schedule for his transfer from West Ham United.

The Hammers have accepted an initial payment of £5m for Downing, who began his career with Boro before moving on to Aston Villa and Liverpool, with the final fee potentially rising as high as £7m if the Teessiders achieve promotion to the Premier League.

Downing is expected to sign a five-year deal at the Riverside, with his return to the North-East likely to be confirmed on Friday.

It remains to be seen whether he then travels to Marbella for the final stages of Boro's pre-season training camp, or remains at Rockliffe Hall to await his new team-mates' return.

Downing has turned down the opportunity to join a number of Premier League clubs, including North-East rivals Sunderland and Leicester City, in order to rejoin Middlesbrough.

The 30-year-old made 234 senior appearances for Boro after graduating through the club's academy, and has won 35 senior caps for England.

He was told he could leave West Ham earlier in the summer, and has been training on his own after Slaven Bilic left him out of his squad for his club's opening pre-season matches.

However, the Hammers had been waiting to secure a replacement before agreeing to his release, with Italian Manuel Lanzini set to move to Upton Park to take his place.
