HARTLEPOOL UNITED recorded their first win since October 11 –ending their blank run at the 13th attempt with a deserved win over Cheltenham.

It was a first win for new boss Ronnie Moore, at the fifth attempt.

Pools never let up their incessant workrate, from front to back and in the centre of defence, Scott Harrison and Dan Jones were solid.

Harrison had a 19th minute headed cleared off the line, before Scott Fenwick squandered a chance for the opener, sweeping a low finish into the visiting goalkeeper Trevor Carson.

But Fenwick scored on 38 minutes. Jack Compton crossed from the left low and, as Carson hesitated, Fenwick nipped in at the far post to net.

Last time Pools went ahead – at home to Oxford in Moore’s first home game in charge – they panicked and didn’t know how to see the game out.

But this time, they dominated the second period.

Fenwick and Rakish Bingham were a handful up front all day and the latter joined his team-mate on the scoresheet.

Pools were defending, but found Bingham who held the ball up and played in the impressive Michael Woods. Bingham charged ahead, took the ball in return and finished low across Carson.

Cheltenham offered little, but did hit the bar in the closing stages.
