HE has scored eight goals in as many games since joining Darlington, yet there is room for improvement, says in-form striker Reece Styche.

His opener in last Saturday’s draw with Chorley took his tally for the season to 18 in all competitions, eight of them coming in Quakers colours since joining from Tamworth in November.

Despite his goalscoring exploits, which see him placed fourth in the National League North top scorers ranks, the 28-year-old feels frustrated with his all-round play, and wants to do better for the team.

He said: “Yeah it was great that I scored again, but I need to start releasing the ball quicker. I’m frustrated with myself. The lads were saying ‘you’re scoring, we’ll win games’. It’s all well and good scoring, but my overall game must be better.

“I’ve got to move the ball quicker and not take so many touches.

“I think it happened because I was so desperate to win, but it can have a negative impact on the team.

“I’ve got experienced lads around me, talking to me, I just need to start playing one and two-touch, and even more goals will come, hopefully.

“Another reason that I’ve been overcomplicating things is that I’m really confident. But I need to do the basics right.”

Darlington are at Leamington on Saturday, a key game against another club at the wrong end of the table.

Styche will hope to repeat his success from August, when he was in the Tamworth team that won 2-1 at Leamington, while he retains belief that Quakers can haul themselves out of danger.

He added: “Overall I’ve started 21 or 22 games and got 18 goals, so my goal record is very good. I’m in a rich vein of form, but I’m not going to get carried away because I could go until the end of the season without scoring.

“I try not to get too high with the highs and too low with the lows, but I’m confident that the team will turn this around.”
