Bernardo Espinosa has forced his way into Aitor Karanka’s plans for Middlesbrough’s match at West Brom on Sunday.

The Colombian signed from Sporting Gijon has proved his fitness in games for the under-21’s and will be in the manager’s squad at The Hawthorns.

Karanka said:”I think he is close to a first team call-up.  He has been training for three or four weeks and he is ready to play.”

The central defender may be needed as Karanka wrestles with the problem of losing his three left-backs, George Friend, Fabio and James Husband, who are all injured.

“Players will have to adapt,” he said. “Somebody will have to play in a different position, but maybe we can change the shape of the team.”

Adam Forshaw is certain to stay in midfield after signing a new , improved contract.

Karanka said:”I’m really pleased because he’s the type of player who deserves it and now he’s on the pitch for us.”

Karanka is relishing the opportunity to come up against West Brom boss Tony Pulis, a manager he greatly admires.

“I have a good relationship with him,” he said. “He’s an amazing manager with experience.

“They are a strong side, particularly at set pieces, and it will be a tough game.

“Our cup game at Fulham was disappointing, but we have a good reaction most of the time whenever we have a bad game.”
