Surrey Brown Caps v Yorkshire Phoenix (Nat West Pro 40) day 1

TEN overs of brilliant bowling from Adil Rashid and David Wainwright choked the life out of Surrey as Yorkshire survived a late onslaught to kick start their Pro 40 campaign with victory by 10 runs in Guildford.

After 16 overs the hosts were looking dangerous on 75 for three, 21 behind Yorkshire at the same stage, but the introduction of the Carnegie’s two spinners halted the Brown Caps progress with an astonishing spell that yielded just 27 runs from 60 balls leaving Surrey 44 shy of Yorkshire after 26.

Rashid also produced an impressive display with the bat, making 33 from 34 balls late in the Yorkshire innings.

“We lost a few quick wickets but me and Ritchie (Pyrah) had a good spell,” he said. “We tried to go at six an over and then open up with a few boundaries and in the end it was a good score. Hopefully this performance will set me up to play well for the rest of the season.”

Chasing 230, Surrey had put themselves in a good position after a bad start had seen them reduced to 25 for three. Mark Ramprakash faced just three balls and scored a single before he was trapped in front by Rana Naved.

Surrey’s recovery was started by Uzman Afzaal, having already weighed in with three wickets in the Yorkshire innings he managed 41 before frustration at the metronomic accuracy of Rashid and Wainwright led to him slog sweeping the former, only to top edge and loop a catch to Jacques Rudolph.

Chris Jordan also made life difficult for the visitors with a knock of 38 but after a frustrating start to his spell that saw 20 runs plundered from two overs, Darren Gough re removed Jordan for lbw.

The hosts accelerated in the closing stages with Chris Schofield and Jonathan Batty putting on 42 for the sixth wicket before Batty holed out to Richard Pyrah at long off to leave Surrey on 178 for six, still 53 runs behind with less than five overs remaining.

Further resistance took Surrey to 194 before Rashid took a difficult catch to remove Schofield for 58.

Jason Roy was bowled by Rana Naved for five to take what would prove to be the final wicket of the day, with Jade Dernbach hammering two sixes and a four of the final three balls of the match to make the winning margin just 10, Surrey finishing on 219 for eight.

After winning the toss and batting, 36 runs off the last three overs swept Yorkshire to 230 with Adil Rashid and Richard Pyrah doing the damage after Andrew Gale and Anthony McGrath scored 44 and 37 respectively.
