DURHAM'S floodlight failure brought down a dark curtain on their one-day season last night, when they lost their YB 40 match at Derby by 107 runs after being dismissed for 110.

All the wickets fell to spinners on a pitch which deteriorated alarmingly, but Durham could have few complaints after choosing to bat second.

Against a side they had previously thrashed in all formats this season it was another miserable performance after their floodlit defeats at Northampton and Chelmsford.

Durham slipped below Lancashire into third place in group B and even though some other results went in their favour, which made it all the more galling, they have no chance of progressing to the semi-finals.

The previous two failures must have created confusion over what to do on winning the toss, particularly crashing to nine for four when batting first against Essex.

The Derby track offered increasingly lavish turn and variable bounce, allowing 20-year-old left-arm spinner Tom Knight to look almost unplayable.

That wasn't the case, however, when Gareth Breese was conceding 31 in four overs during a stand of 103 which allowed Derbyshire to recover from 36 for three to make 217 for eight.

Durham then made another poor start. With drizzle falling the threat of Duckworth / Lewis may have prompted some anxiety, although they would have been aware of the forecast when they chose to field first.

Home captain Wayne Madsen, no more than an occasional off-spinner, sent down the second over and Phil Mustard played back to the South African's second ball and was bowled.

In the sixth over Scott Borthwick pulled Madsen straight down the throat of deep mid-wicket to make it 14 for two.

Madsen bagged three wickets for the first time in a one-day match when he had Mark Stoneman caught at long-off, ending a stand of 46 with Paul Collingwood.

But even in that partnership it was obvious that Durham were up against it as Sheffield-born Knight had twice beaten Collingwood with turn and bounce.

There was an air of desperation when the ex-England man went down the pitch and got an inside edge just wide of leg stump for four and it was no surprise when he miscued Knight to depart for 24.

Knight then bowled Ben Stokes with a ball which barely left the ground before the other Yorkshire-born left-arm spinner, David Wainwright, bowled Gordon Muchall to make it 82 for six.

It was a hopeless position and the rest surrendered in desperation as Durham were all out in 28.4 overs.

Spin had also been effective at the end of the Derbyshire innings, with Ryan Pringle and Will Smith recording combined figures of 9-1-31-3.

In light of that it was clearly a mistake to bring back Chris Rushworth for the 38th over, which cost 20 runs.

The dangerous Chesney Hughes pulled Mark Wood for six in the fourth over but after making 24 he skied a catch to deep backward square off Rushworth.

Wood, looking lively, picked up two wickets, but Durham paid a heavy price for Stokes having Richard Johnson caught behind off a no-ball, which bounced steeply and brushed a glove with the batsman on 17.

With a free hit available off the next delivery Stokes followed up with another no-ball, which was hardly encouraging preparation for his appearance for England Lions against Australia in the two-day match at Northampton starting today.

Johnson, formerly Warwickshire's reserve wicketkeeper, is now in the Derbyshire team purely as a batsman and went on to make 58.

He put on 103 with Madsen before both fell in the 27th over to Collingwood, who had rested with figures of 6-0-19-0, but was swiftly recalled after Wood conceded nine in an over.

Madsen departed for 37 when he aimed over mid-wicket and gave a catch to mid-on. Three balls later Johnson was deceived by a slower ball and was bowled, having hit four fours in his 66-ball innings.

Collingwood finished with two for 25 to atone for Breese's struggles, which may have deterred Stoneman from calling on Pringle until the stand had been broken.

He took one for 12 in five overs, two of them bowled in the batting powerplay at the end of the innings, while Smith picked up wickets in each of his first two overs.

Smith was replaced by Rushworth for that costly 38th over, when most of the runs were scored by Tony Pallodino, who included a six over mid-wicket in his 22 before Pringle bowled him.

Smith returned for the final over and only a leg bye came off the first five balls before he fired the last one through and it evaded Mustard to go for four byes, taking the total of extras to 25.

It was just another unwelcome statistic for Durham to ponder in the post-mortem into their one-day demise.
