Paul Collingwood returns to the Durham team at Lord's today and will be hoping for a big improvement on his first appearance at the famous ground 16 years ago.

He was just short of his 20th birthday when he followed his outstanding first-class debut at home to Northants with the trip to play Middlesex.

Durham led by 18 runs on first innings but after Mike Gatting followed up by making 171 they were dismissed for 67. The little-known David Follett took eight for 22, while there was a wicket each for Phil Tufnell and Angus Fraser, now Middlesex's managing director of cricket.

After recovering from the virus which kept him out of the defeat by Nottinghamshire, Collingwood replaces Mark Stoneman in what is likely to be the only change.

Neil Dexter has temporarily stood down as captain of Middlesex's four-day side to concentrate on his batting. Although Andrew Strauss is available for the next few games, the reins have been handed to Australian Chris Rogers, who made 156 for Derbyshire against Durham at Derby in 2004.

Dexter took over as captain last year and guided Middlesex to the division two title. He will remain club captain and will lead the side in one-day matches.

Fraser said: "I applaud Neil for his selfless and honest behaviour. I selected him as captain in 2010 because of the standards and values he holds. His captaincy during our three-run victory over Surrey last week was outstanding."

Middlesex are resting Corey Collymore to accommodate England paceman Steve Finn, while Scott Newman makes way for Strauss.

Making their first four-day visit to Lord's for six years, Durham need to bounce back from the defeat by Nottinghamshire, with coach Geoff Cook saying: "We need to bat with a little more application.

"There weren't too many wild shots played, but there were some bad decisions in terms of what to leave.

"The bowlers need to reproduce what they did for two-thirds of the game and not let their standards slip.

"It could have been a different game had Michael Lumb not got off the mark by edging between the wicketkeeper and first slip on the way to his hundred. We'll have Paul Collingwood at first slip this time, so Scott Borthwick can make his energy count in other parts of the field."
