PAUL COLLINGWOOD will have no qualms about not having Ben Stokes under his wing when he takes up his England one-day coaching role in November.

Stokes is in the squad for three Tests against Pakistan in the UAE, but will not feature in the four one-day internationals and three Twenty20s which follow. His Durham colleague, Mark Wood, is in both squads.

Collingwood, who will also assist at the World Cup in India in March, said: “Ben will be wondering why he needs to be rested but if the selectors think that's the way to get the best out of him in the long-term then I agree with it.

“The schedule is relentless and players are constantly being asked to play at full intensity.”

Collingwood reassured Durham fans that however well he performs in his England role it will not affect his availability for his county next season.

“I love to be involved with England and that will never diminish,” he said. “But I still have 100 per cent commitment to Durham and Andrew Strauss is fully aware of that. I still have so much to give to Durham both on the field and in the dressing room.

“As a player I have always wanted to eke out every single ounce of my ability and I want to get others to do that.

“You play a lot of international cricket with your heart. It's amazing what you can do with the reserve tank when you have the pride of playing for the Three Lions.

“I can't wait to get involved with a very exciting group of young players. We have seen great signs for the future this summer. The players are a lot more skilful than I have ever been, but I hope to help create an environment in which they learn their own games and get the best out of themselves.

“I think the fact that I played 197 one-day internationals is one reason why I've got the job. It has given me an understanding of different conditions around the world.

“Also, because I'm still playing I have a modern way of thinking and can see how the game is developing. To win World Cups you have to be a step ahead and that's where we want to be.

“We have to develop the players to win the 2019 World Cup and I think we have the right personnel to achieve that.”

Collingwood revealed that he will not be involved when England tour South Africa in the New Year because he hopes to be playing in a Masters T20 tournament in Dubai.

He has played for Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League and said: “It's hard to measure how much you learn from playing in the IPL and Australia's Big Bash.

“They teach you how to handle pressure situations. The IPL is like a crash course in modern thinking. Ideas get bounced around and a lot of secrets come out.”

Collingwood believes that instilling confidence is a huge part of coaching and says he first began to learn that in his second season when David Boon took over the Durham captaincy in 1997.

“He said first-class cricket was 80 per cent mental and for Test cricket it was 90 per cent. I didn't know what he meant at first, but he got the message through.”
