JONNY BAIRSTOW knows just what it is like to make your Test debut at Lord’s - and he expects Yorkshire team-mate Adam Lyth to handle the nerves and flourish against New Zealand tomorrow.

White Rose opener Lyth will partner Alastair Cook against the new ball in the first of two Test matches against a resurgent New Zealand side including his county colleague Kane Williamson.

Lyth toured the Caribbean recently without playing in any of the three Tests, but he has got his chance on the back of Jonathan Trott’s retirement.

The 27-year-old scored over 1,400 LV= County Championship runs last season, and has scored a 100 and a 50 in his only two appearances for Yorkshire in 2015.

The left-hander hit 113 and 46 not out in the champion county win over the MCC in Abu Dhabi in March before returning from the West Indies to post 53 and 23 in last week’s Championship win over Hampshire at Headingley.

Bairstow has played four of his 14 Tests at Lord’s, including a debut against the West Indies in May 2012.

He has played in an Ashes clash there, in July 2013, and his highest Test score of 95 also came against world number one side South Africa there during his debut summer.

“There are lots of different things about walking out at Lord’s,” said Bairstow.

“It’s a full house, there will be nerves around, but Lythy will take it on the chin. He’s ready and raring to go, and I’m sure he will relish that environment.

“He’s scored thousands of runs now, and he deserves his chance.

“It’s going to be a fantastic week for him, his family and the people he’s played with throughout his career. We wish him all the best, and I’m sure he will do well.”
