EAGLESCLIFFE won the Northumberland and Durham Inter County Foursomes at the weekend.

Sam Donald and Tom Smith celebrated for Eaglescliffe after emerging from some late drama to win the event.

The pair were two up with three to play against Ponteland’s Russell Hayhoe and Duncan Ross, who then made birdie on 17 to be one down playing last.

Both went close to driving the green, when Ponteland holed a ten footer to put the pressure on Donald. He knocked in his shorter putt after Smith’s chip for a half and a one up win.

RAMSIDE Hall has marked its 21st anniversary year by investing £50,000 into new practice facilities and covered storage for its fleet of buggies.

The improvements include a new Short Game Zone with a 300 square metre artificial green where golfers can practice pitching and chipping.

The zone also features an 850 square metre putting green located at the entrance to Ramside’s Cathedral Course.

The Northern Echo:

Roger Shaw, courses manager (pictured), said: “This new practice facility is one of only a handful in the North of England and has been built so that golfers can practice on a surface that is weather proof and never changes, come rain or shine. When other facilities are waterlogged or bogged down in mud, golfers can come and enjoy high quality practice sessions at Ramside.”

The final part of Ramside’s programme of improvements was the construction of two 16m long shelters covered with artificial grass tiles. The structures house a fleet of 36 golf buggies and provide year round protection against the weather.

MIDDLESBROUGH’S James Swash was the highest ranked North-East golfer at the recent McEvoy Trophy.

Swash’s 288-shot four over total for the four rounds was 14 shots shy of the winner Charlie Strickland and earned him a share of 21st place at Copt Heath. Castle Eden and Seaton Carew’s Cameron Wallace – who won the British Colleges’ National Individual title last week - and Hartlepool’s Jack Ainscough missed the cut after posting two rounds totaling eight over and 11 over respectively.
