BRIAN Weston decided he wanted to do something a bit different with the annual captain’s charity fund-raiser.

The Heworth members were asked to contribute to the 2015 event with Brian determined the money would go to a good local cause in the Gateshead area rather than one of the big national charities.

As a result is what was virtually his last act as 2015 captain, Brian was able to hand over a cheque for £1,700 towards the purchase of the top-of-the-range powered wheelchair for Dunston’s Kirsty Spowart, who was identified as a worthy recipient of the finds with the help of Jacquie Etherington from South Tyneside Physiotherapy Services, Tracey Peters from South Tyneside Learning Disability Services and Carole Watson of South Tyneside Health Focus Group.

Kirsty and her mother Christine were guests at the Heworth club’s annual Christmas party for people with learning or physical disabilities for the cheque hand over.

“We just decided this year we’d like to do something a little bit different,” said Brian. “I asked the club members to get behind the idea and they didn’t let me down.”

Meanwhile, the club are looking at a possible grant application with a view to developing an area between the 12th and 13th fairways into a driving area with perhaps three driving bays and five or six all-weather tees and greens and possibly a chipping and pitching area.

It’s hoped it will increase the practice areas and allow the club to provide taster and coaching sessions for beginners and non-members and will offer people within the local community the opportunity to try the game of golf in a safe and relaxed environment.
