A NORTH-EAST amateur boxing club was one of the two biggest winners at the 130th England Boxing Elite National Championships last weekend.

Birtley saw Luke McCormack and Thomas Hodgson claim titles by defeating Tower Hill’s Callum Thompson (split decision) and Rumble’s Martin McDonagh (unanimous) respectively.

Joe Laws, also of Birtley, could not make it a hat-trick for the Tyne & Wear club as he lost out to Bradford Police’s Harris Akbar in the 69kg category.

There was also another triumph from the same county, with Sunderland’s Kiaran Macdonald edging out Connor Butler on a split decision in the 49kg at The Magna Centre in Rotherham.

Light-flyweight MacDonald and light-welterweight McCormack won second elite national crowns.

Nineteen national champions were crowned from clubs from clubs in Tyne & Wear, the North-West, the West Midlands, the South-West, the south coast, Yorkshire, London and the eastern counties of England.

Birtley and Nemesis were the two most successful clubs on the day by with two winners.
