North-East boxing received a double boost as Anthony Nelson and Peter Cope were crowned on Sunday evening.

At Temple Park, South Shields, both Nelson took home the English super flyweight title, as Cope won the Northern Area lightweight honour.

Nelson's fight lived up to the hype as he saw off Leeds’ battle-hardened Terry Broadbent in a ten-round batttle, won on a unanimous decision.

Cope's bout with Middlesbrough’s John Green also went the distance. The Hartlepool fighter never really gave the English super featherweight challenger an opportunity to get into his stride, claiming a narrow 96-95 victory. He now meets Andrew Townend next month as he builds up to a potential second shot at the English title.

RUGBY LEAGUE: St Helens will decide whether to pursue their own action against Wigan forward Ben Flower after consulting with police over his attack on half-back Lance Hohaia in the Super League Grand Final.

Flower, sent off for twice striking the Saints player, including once while he was motionless on the ground, could receive a suspension of more than eight matches after he was charged by the Rugby Football League's match review panel with the most severe offence.

The 26-year-old Wales international will appear in front of a disciplinary tribunal at RFL headquarters in Leeds today on a Grade F offence accused of "violent and aggressive punching on an off-guard opponent".

St Helens may also decide to take the matter further after a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed the Crown Prosecution Service could become involved.

"An officer is due to speak to officials at St Helens today and will also be in consultation with the RFL and if appropriate the CPS in order to decide what, if any, action will be taken," said a spokesman.

"It is not expected that a final decision will be made today in relation to whether or not there will be any further police involvement."

Hohaia has also been charged over the incident, although with a lesser Grade B offence for allegedly using a forearm to the face of Flower.

CRICKET: Derbyshire have begun talks with India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara over a return to the county as their overseas player for the 2015 season. Pujara made a surprise move to the LV= County Championship Division Two side in the closing stages of this year's campaign and scored 219 runs in their final three matches.

CRICKET: Australia captain Michael Clarke is set for a return to action this week after recovering from a hamstring injury that had threatened to rule him out of the Test series against Pakistan.

The complaint forced him to miss the one-day portion of the tour although he was not missed as George Bailey led the team to a 3-0 whitewash in the United Arab Emirates.

But Clarke has now fully shaken off the problem, sustained in the triangular series against Zimbabwe and South Africa in August, and will feature in this week's four-day tour match against a Pakistan A side ahead of the two-match Test series.
