KATY McLean, the Darlington Mowden Park Shark, fell short in her quest to help Great Britain’s women make history on Monday night as they were beaten 33-10 by Canada in the Rugby Sevens bronze medal match at Rio 2016.

Both teams were looking to become the first nation to win an Olympic Sevens medal of any colour but Canada ran in five tries to seal third spot.

After Karen Paquin had given Canada a 7-0 lead it was McLean’s perfectly weighted chip in behind that Danielle Waterman picked up to run in the corner.

It was one-way traffic from then on out though as Ghislaine Landry grabbed a hat-trick of tries to go with a Bianca Farella score in an ultimately one-sided affair.

GB captain Emily Scarratt was yellow carded for a deliberate knock-on just before half-time, allowing Farella to captialise and make it 26-5 at the break.

Substitute Jasmine Jayne gave GB a sign of hope with six minutes remaining when she crossed after a sharp pass from Heather Fisher.

But Landry, who was the best player on the pitch, found a gap in GB’s defence to go in under the posts for a converted score to leave the British team heartbroken.
