ALYSON DIXON has put her name into the frame for qualification for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio with a personal best at today’s Berlin Marathon.

The Sunderland Stroller needed to dip under 2.31.00 in order to gain a qualification time for the Olympics but she completed her goal in style, finishing 11th in a time of 2.29.30. Fellow Briton Sonia Samuels finished ninth in 2.28.04, in a race won by Kenya's Gladys Cherono.

Both Dixon and Samuels are the only female GB marathon runners to achieve a qualification time so far, with British Athletics deciding on their three athletes closer to next summer’s Games.

Scott Overall finished tenth in 2.11.24, under the British Athletics qualification standard, but there was disappointment for Middlesbrough athlete Matty Hynes who pulled out at 30km through injury. Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge won the men's race in 2.04.00.
