NEWCASTLE UNITED are in danger of missing out on their second Twente target of the summer after being told the asking price for defender Douglas has not budged.

The Magpies have been in regular contact with the Eredivisie outfit over the last few weeks and are being quoted £5m for the powerful centre-back.

Earlier discussions have led to a bid of around £3.1m for Brazilian-born Douglas from Tyneside, but Twente do not want to sell him for less than their valuation despite the fact he is out of contract in 12 months.

Steve McClaren, the Twente boss, thinks Douglas is more than capable of succeeding in the Premier League and would rather keep him for a further season.

And following the £10m-plus departure of striker Luuk de Jong - who Newcastle also tried to sign - to Borussia Monchengladbach there is no need for Twente to rush in to a further sale.

Fulham and West Ham United are also known to have been in touch with Twente, with both Martin Jol and Sam Allardyce keen to bring the 24-year-old over to the English top-flight.

With Newcastle showing this summer that they are in no mood to ease their hard bargaining stance on potential transfer deals, the door has been left open for the London clubs to move in.

Twente have accepted that Douglas is likely to leave this summer, it is just they will not be allowing him to go unless they receive the £5m sum.

Douglas is keen to have residence in Enschede until the end of August when he will officially hold full Dutch citizenship, meaning he will be eligible to play for Holland.

Newcastle are busy trying to strengthen their squad further after the signings of Romain Amalfitano and Gael Bigirimana. As well as Douglas, manager Alan Pardew is also targeting a number of other defenders.

Lille's £7m-rarted right-back Mathieu Debuchy has outlined a wish for his club to reach an agreement with Newcastle over his move.

There has also been interest shown in Ajax midfielder Vurnon Anita, who can also play left-back, and there was a tentative offer made last month.

But Ajax's director of football Marc Overmars, who recently took on the role, has claimed Newcastle's interest has cooled in a player also attracting Sunderland.

Overmars said: "If Frank de Boer wants to keep him, Vurnon should stay with Ajax. His contract has two left on it and we are very pleased with him. In the two weeks I have been with Ajax I have heard nothing from Newcastle."
