SWANSEA CITY are still keeping an eye on Marvin Emnes' situation and are weighing up a summer move for the Middlesbrough striker.

The Swans are armed with more money after successfully staying in the Premier League in their first season following promotion.

And sources in South Wales suggest manager Brendan Rodgers is exploring all the options in his bid to freshen up his squad, with improving his attacking talents high in his thinking.

Rodgers remains a huge admirer of Emnes, who could be valued at around £5m, despite failing in his attempts to prise him away from the Riverside Stadium on a number of occasions last year.

The 23-year-old scored 18 goals in the Championship last season and had been hoping to help Middlesbrough back to the Premier League after signing a new contract last August.

The deal he signed means manager Tony Mowbray knows the player is committed to three more seasons with the Teesside club.

But Swansea, who signed Leroy Lita from Middlesbrough last summer, will be able to offer more in terms of a transfer fee than they were able to go to last season.

It was at this stage last year when Rodgers tried to take Lita and Emnes to the Liberty Stadium in a double deal - in the end he had to settle for just Lita.

But now, after Swansea earned £46million for finishing mid-table in their first season in the Premier League, the former Reading boss knows he can afford to pay more.

Mowbray will be reluctant to offload Emnes this summer, knowing this season's leading goalscorer has shown he can deliver in front of goal in the Championship.

But after failing to secure a return to the top-flight over the last nine months, the Mowbray also knows he must be creative in the transfer market to put his own mark on his squad.

The likelihood is that at least one player could be sold before the start of next season, although the likes of prize assets Emnes and Rhys Williams would be two of those he would prefer to keep.

Middlesbrough are already working on a number of deals for free agents and among those being lined up to arrive is Ipswich Town's Grant Leadbitter.

However, depending on the number of players signed, Mowbray knows he could have to offload a few more than he had been planning for.

He has already lost Barry Robson, Jonathan Franks, Jonathan Grounds, Danny Coyne and Luke Dobie. The futures of Justin Hoyte, Tony McMahon, Matthew Bates, Malaury Martin and Bartholomew Ogbeche - all set to become free agents - are still up in the air.

There is interest in Stephen McManus from Bristol City, while Scott McDonald is reported to have knocked back an opportunity to move to the Middle East.

Mowbray, meanwhile, has raised concerns over the condition of Williams when he returns for pre-season training in July.

Williams, who has recently recovered from ankle ligament damage, has been called up for Australia for three internationals, including two World Cup qualifiers.

He will be on duty for three weeks, so Mowbray has given him permission to have an extended break from Rockliffe Park and will not be expected to meet up with the rest of the Boro squad on July 5 when they return for training.

The Aussies play Oman on June 8 and Japan on June 12 after they have faced Denmark in Copenhagen in a friendly on June 1.

Nineteen-year-old Cameron Park, meanwhile, will link up with the Scotland Under-20 squad next week for the ADO Den Haag youth tournament. Ricky Sbragia's team face Den Haag, Manchester City and Cruzeiro.
