MARTIN O'NEILL knows what changes are required at Sunderland and is already looking forward to a summer shake up when the season comes to an end.

O'Neill is yet to finalise his transfer targets with owner Ellis Short, but he is determined to make sure his squad includes two forward thinkers who score more than ten goals each.

The Black Cats boss is keen to end the campaign on a high by claiming back-to-back wins over Fulham on Sunday and then Manchester United the following week.

Such a finish would not only bring to a close a seven-match run without a victory, it is also likely to secure a top ten place for the second year in a row.

O'Neill is intent on keeping his players focused on achieving that goal, although he admits there is already one eye on the close-season - when he expects to make a number of additions to his squad.

"I have a fairly decent idea," he said. "Myself and Mr (Ellis) Short will have a conversation in the not too distant future. There is no doubt we are getting down to some serious work in the future."

He added: "We need at least two players getting well into double figures."

O'Neill was yesterday linked with Twente winger Ola John, just days after he admitted he was interested in looking at the European market. He also knows there will have to be some who move on from Wearside.

Despite sticking, largely, with the players that have served him reasonably well during his six months in charge, O'Neill feels confident he knows all about the merits of all the members of his squad.

And if there are fringe players who are still part of the group when they return for pre-season training in early July, he is expecting those to be out to impress.

"I have a good idea of the abilities of the players who have played regularly for me," he said. "The last two games won't make a massive difference to my thinking.

"But contracts are not up (for all players) so pre-season becomes important for some of them and it could be a chance for them to play a bigger part."

While the majority of players are still under contract there will be a number who will not be around when the Premier League restarts in August.

Along with the loans of Wayne Bridge, Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Nicklas Bendtner reaching an end, Scotland international Craig Gordon remains the most likely high profile departure.

Gordon has effectively become third choice goalkeeper at Sunderland this season and the fact his lucrative contract expires this summer is likely to mean he will leave.

And O'Neill, keen to bring in a couple of strikers and offload Asamoah Gyan on a full-time basis, said: "If Craig had concerns about his fitness, he will have alleviated those concerns. He did very well in the game against Bolton last weekend.

"He would have been anxious and rusty. He came through it well. I have been a big admirer of him for a long time.

"I do know we have three keepers and two of them still in contract, both have done well. Can I keep all three? I would have thought unlikely."

He will hold talks with Gordon and his agent sooner rather than later to discuss his future, something he could end up having to do with Kieran Richardson.

Richardson, linked with a move to Arsenal last January, will soon enter the final year of his contract and there has been no discussions aimed at extending the stay.

O'Neill did not want to talk specifically about the former Manchester United midfielder but did hint he would listen to offers for players.

He said: "I will deal as a team, not individuals. I imagine there will be an interest in players from our club and we will be interested in others.

"Kieran has a year left to run and we will sit with him and his agent at the end of the season to discuss his future."

O'Neill is monitoring foot injuries picked up by John O'Shea and Bendtner against Bolton. Neither have trained this week but have not been ruled out of playing at Craven Cottage.
