ALAN SHEARER thinks a low expectancy ahead of this summer's European Championships could be the perfect start to life as England boss for Roy Hodgson.

Hodgson was formally appointed as Fabio Capello's successor on Tuesday when he agreed to take over the national team once he has finished the season with West Bromwich Albion.

And, while initially surprised that it was not Harry Redknapp given the job, former England skipper Shearer is hopeful the decision will pay-off.

Due to the lack of time Hodgson has to prepare a squad in his way for the finals, there is a general belief fans should not expect too much too soon at Euro 2012.

Shearer thinks that could be in Hodgson's favour. He said: "I think it's going to be really tough for England at the Euros because the planning hasn't been ideal.

"However, I have a great respect for Roy and what he's done within the game. Let's be honest and say everybody thought Harry would get the job and yet he hasn't. So everyone now has to get behind Roy and give him as much support as he needs.

"We also need to get behind the team. Whether they can win it or not, I don't know. For the first time in a long time, we are probably going into a tournament with no huge expectations. That could turn out to be a good thing for England."

Shearer was speaking at Rockliffe Hall yesterday where he was among the celebrities taking part in a golf day aimed at raising money for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

He was keeping up to date with Newcastle's result at Chelsea last night, knowing his beloved Magpies could still claim a Champions League place.

Shearer said: "Sir Bobby would absolutely have loved this season for Newcastle. It's been something similar to the football we played under him.

"Newcastle have had a magnificent year, they really have. I hope they can finish it of in style, but even if they don't they deserve tremendous credit for the success they have had.

"Alan Pardew, his players and the staff have done a remarkable job at the club. I can only hope they follow it up next year.

"We did that and it will be tough. Listen, nobody expected them to do as well as they have done this season, so there will still be doubters who will say they will fade away next season.

"But, hey, I'm sure Alan isn't thinking about next season as of yet. He still has two massive games to think about before then. If they can take six points from the final two games then who knows (where they will end up)."
