SEVEN unbeaten games into their League One season and Mick Wadsworth will not let anyone at Hartlepool United ease up.

Victory at Carlisle last weekend, their third in a row, was of great satisfaction to the coach on his return to one of his former clubs.

But it will count for little if they do not follow it up with a positive result against Bury at Victoria Park tomorrow.

The visitors, managed by former Pools striker Ritchie Barker, have lost their last six games in all competitions.

Wadsworth watched them lose at Chesterfield on Tuesday and warned: "We have had a good start, long may it continue. When we went into the first game I said I felt we were better, stronger and had a better balance.

"But it's always relative to results and performance, so we've had a steady improvement in performance, but it's been steady and that steadyness has us in a good position.

"Now we must not waste it, that's the key now. It's like having a great drive down the middle of the fairway in golf, pitching onto the green and then having three or four putts to finish off.

"We've got down the fairway and now we've got to make sure it's not wasted. We won away last week and don't want to waste that result by slipping up.''

Adam Boyd has four goals in four away games this season, but has yet to score on his home patch.

Wadsworth is pleased with the potential of his strike partnership with Colin Nish and is sure it will not be long before Boyd is off and running at home, thanks to the unselfish nature of Nish's game.

"It would be nice for Nishy to score every week, but it's not the be all and end all," said the coach. "We have scored more goals this season than last and he is a big part of it. He takes a hell of a lot of weight off the rest of the team.

"He helps Boydy immensely and opposing coaches and manager say every week what a hard job he has given their centre-halves. I find that very rewarding because I see that.

"Maybe not everyone does, perhaps it's the Emile Heskey syndrome. People don't always see what he gives us.

"But he has goals and he could do with one, but if he doesn't score until Christmas and we keep winning games, I don't care.''

Evan Horwood return to training yesterday after a thigh strain, but will not be considered tomorrow, while Andy Monkhouse has missed training with a virus this week, but is likely to be fit enough to be include in the squad.
