MIDDLESBROUGH have revealed that they had first refusal on the signing of Charlie Simpson-Daniel but were not inclined to meet his financial requirements.

Following his release by Gloucester, the youngest of the four talented brothers from Yarm made his debut for Darlington Mowden Park as a second half replacement last Saturday.

The eldest brother, Chris, played for Boro and maintains the family link with the club, who lost at home to Mowden in National Three North two weeks ago, prior to 20-year-old Charlie’s decision to plump for the Darlington club.

Boro are at home tomorrow to Bradford and Bingley, who won their first two games easily before losing heavily to Penrith.

The speedy Peter Homan, who missed most of last season through injury, returns on the wing for Boro in place of the unavailable Andy Micklewright.

Adrian Rose continues at full back and Lee Theakston at prop, with Ben Horton selected for the second team.

Westoe will expect to continue their unbeaten start in National Two North at home to promoted Morley, who have yet to gain a point.

Westoe have forged ahead since they lost the 2005 Intermediate Cup final to Morley at Twickenham, from which they have only four survivors in tomorrow’s line-up.

They are lock Paul Bird, prop Raymie Elliott, scrum half Chris Judson and centre Dave Haswell, who continues to captain the team in the absence of Gareth Nesbit with a broken toe.

Westoe are spoilt for choice in the back row and have Jonathan Okwe-Pearson on the bench while Haydn Richards, normally a flanker, is selected at hooker as Nigel Douglas is unavailable.

Stockton will again have coach Craig Lee at fly half for the visit of unbeaten Darlington, the club he left four years ago after eight seasons as a player-coach.

Darlington sometimes featured eight ex-Stockton men during their climb to the national leagues, so the hosts will be keen to remind them that they are now on an equal footing in Durham & Northumberland One.

As Stockton were initially higher up the ladder, this is the first league encounter between the clubs since leagues began in 1987. Stockton will be without skipper Mark Skirving, who broke his right arm in the 17-6 victory at Horden, when they came from behind to win. He will be replaced in the back row by Phil Douglas or Wayne Brown, who face fitness tests.

Lock Craig Tennant, who was forced off with a shoulder injury last week, hopes to be fit.

In the backs centre Steve Thornton is available so Simon Crozier moves back out to the wing.
