STAMINA is required by punters as it is day five of Glorious Goodwood, but it’s speed the horses need in the cavalry charge that is the Bluesq.com Stewards’ Cup, due off at 3:40pm.

Twenty-eight top-class handicappers face the starter, among them plenty of northern raiders trying to plunder the first prize. There are five horses from Richard Fahey’s yard, three apiece for David Nicholls and Kevin Ryan, while David Barron adds a couple more to the mix.

They could all have Jonny Mudball to beat, as he is a four-year-old going places fast.

Trained in Cheshire by Tom Dascombe, he is lightly raced and has a very progressive profile, finishing runner-up a couple of times before demolishing a respected field at Newcastle last time out over this distance of six furlongs.

On the evidence of the racing so far this week, stall 19 should be fine and he can go close under big-race rider Seb Sanders, who was on board last time out.

Earlier in the day, the fillies’ take centre stage in the Group 1 Blue Square Nassau Stakes and Midday is fancied to follow-up last year’s success in this prestigious event.

Trained by the master that is Henry Cecil, the four-yearold proved she has trained on by finishing second to Sariska on her reappearance in the Middleton Stakes at York in May.

She will be ridden again by regular partner Tom Quelly, who missed the ride last time due to suspension.

He is very much looking forward to the task and said: “It’s a tight race but Midday is the only filly in the line-up that has won at the track, which I think is very important.”

There is an eight-race card at Thirsk today and rookie trainer David O’Meara can have another winner with Simple Jim in the staying handicap at 4.40pm.

Silvestre De Sousa, who has ridden him to his last five victories, takes the ride and can give O’Meara his tenth win since taking out his licence two months ago.

In the one-mile handicap (4:05), there are a few confirmed front-runners and this could well set it up for a horse closing off the pace.

Signor Verdi could be the one to benefit from this.

Trained in Lambourn by Brian Meehan, this threeyear- old can improveme and is ridden for the first time by De Sousa.
