FLEETING Spirit can become the first horse since 1958-59 to win back-to-back renewals of the Darley July Cup.

Not since Right Boy struck many moons ago has this unique Newmarket double been completed.

But Jeremy Noseda’s exemplary mare is no ordinary sprinter, and has the correct artillery to shine again at the headquarters of British racing.

The five-year-old daughter of Invincible Spirit landed a white-hot renewal of the July Cup 12 months ago when defeating Main Aim by a length and a quarter.

She then finished second in both the Sprint Cup at Haydock and the Prix de l’Abbaye on Arc weekend at Longchamp.

While disappointing at the Breeders’ Cup, Fleeting Spirit made a splendid return to the racecourse when fourth in the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot.

That effort can be considered all the more laudable as she was forced to race on the far side of the track.

That was unquestionably the wrong part of town at the Royal meeting, so Noseda’s sprinter clearly did exceptionally well to finish first of her 10-runner group.

The obvious negative, of course, is that the reopposing Starspangledbanner - the socalled fastest horse Aidan O’Brien has ever trained - had two and a half lengths in reserve that day.

The Aussie recruit was, however, sent on his way along the stands’ side, which almost certainly played a part in his comprehensive winning distance.

With racing parity much more likely at Newmarket, Fleeting Spirit can claw back his Ascot arrears and write her name into the record books.

St Moritz can later claim the Bunbury Cup.

Finding a winner in this seven-furlong contest - now known as the 32Red Trophy - is never easy, but Mark Johnston’s improving fouryear- old has plenty going for him.

The son of Medicean is one of the most sparingly-raced animals in the line-up, but demonstrated in the Royal Hunt Cup he has a big handicap in his locker.

St Moritz is just 3lb higher than his terrific third at Ascot and is clearly on a steep upward trajectory.

The drop down from a mile - he perhaps grew a shade weary in the Hunt Cup - merely bolsters his claims.

A fine day for Noseda can be enhanced if Formosina does what is expected of him in the 32Red.com Superlative Stakes.

The Footstepsinthesand colt is already a scorer at Group Two level, having pocketed the Curragh’s Railway Stakes last month.
